Enjoy a day at the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway and experience what it is like to work in the signal box

Ludborough Signaling Box

Ludborough signal box was constructed in 1993 on the site of the original signal box.  It has been built on the lines of a Great Northern Railway box similar to Louth North but on a smaller scale.

It is fitted with a McKenzie and Holland 18 lever frame [ex Hainton Street, Grimsby] and operates a  traditional gated crossing with electric key locks.

Ludborough Signal Box became a working signal box again in October 2004 after been officially inspected by HMRI.

Your introduction will start at 0900 hours [or 1400 hours – you will be informed] at Ludborough Station where you will be met by the duty signalman [strictly speaking Ludborough is a gate box so we properly call the signalman a crossing keeper but on the day of your visit a Network Rail signaller will be rostered].  After signing on duty and a quick cup of tea [all railways run on tea!] you will meet the safety officer for a briefing on railway safety procedures.  You will help the signalman open up the signal box and will work it under instruction.  The crossing keeper will be able to answer any question about our signalling [which is fairly basic] or indeed about main line signalling.  After seeing a couple of trains safely in and out of the station you can have a snack in the buffet car  and then enjoy free travel on our train.

If you are the late turn man [1400 hours] you may wish to enjoy your free travel in the morning and lunch before you report for duty.

At the end of your turn of duty you will receive a signed certificate as a souvenir of your day.

Participants must be 18 years or over and able to manage stairs.

The cost is £25, payable on the day
